As 2018 comes to a close, I have looked back on my time as an Intern with Global Ties ABQ and I am thoroughly impressed. When I applied for this position just a few months ago back in August, I had no idea that Destiny would be calling me both figuratively and literally. For those of you who don’t know, Destiny Logan, the Program Coordinator at the office has made my semester here at the non-profit absolutely unforgettable. From that initial phone call all the way to my last day I have felt supported and at home by the Global Ties ABQ Team.
I have worked on programs from the Young Leaders of the America’s Initiative to Integrity in Journalism projects with the Albuquerque Alibi and University of New Mexico’s Communication & Journalism department. The point is, there has never been a dull moment. Whether I was making cold calls or liaising fellows at the International Balloon Festival, whatever I was doing-I was having a great time. I’ve met tons of young professionals like myself, and have grown my network vastly including people from the Caribbean to Nigeria. I’ve created lasting friendships and made memories that I will take with me into the next chapter of my life.
When I took this position as the Community Engagement Coordinator for Global Ties ABQ, I had no idea the extent of global engagement, international communication , marketing and presentation experience I would be getting. The fact that every day I was excited to race up the stairs to the office, and the enjoyment this position has brought me really shown me what I will be looking for in the future. There are jobs out there that will allow you to grow and thrive in all aspects of the work-life, and I am incredibly grateful that I found that fit with Global Ties ABQ.
My name is Shani Harvie, and as a former Global Ties ABQ intern, I can tell you that the work we do as citizen diplomats is not limited to our own enjoyment. We impact our local communities, national perspectives and international visitors immensely, and that work is something I am proud to have been a part of.-Shani Harvie
